This is a one-man show that is part Talk and part Stand-up. It is about grief, loss, and psychedelics. It is the story of how Stuart Preston, after 46 years of a drug-free life, turned to psychedelics to heal with the grief of losing his son.
The Stoned Ape Theory was coined by brothers Terence and Dennis McKenna. The theory — simplified — is that early man’s evolution was aided by finding and consuming magic mushrooms. A “Stoned Ape” in the context of this show is one who has awakened with the aid of psychedelics. There are many stories of people getting help with everything from addiction to PTSD to bulimia to grief with these plant and fungi medicines.
Tickets typically range from $10-25. Tickets sold in pairs get a discount, and all tickets have the option to purchase a copy of Stuart’s book, The Grief Trip.
No! In fact, you may be surprised to know that I don’t even advocate for using psychedelics. I believe the old adage that each of us has our own path in life — the Mountain has but one peak, but there are many paths to the top.

The main portion of the show is about 45 minutes. We then do a Q&A session for about 30-40 minutes. During Q&A, there will usually be 2-3 other “Stoned Apes” from your area to share their stories and help Stuart answer your questions. Please know, we are not trained therapists or pharmacologists, so our answers are purely personal and anecdotal.
